 ASU, Teacher Education Center

The Aklan State University Teacher Education Center is formerly the Northern Panay Teachers College (NPTC) situated on a 10- hectare lot at Calangcang, Makato, Aklan about 1.5 kms. away from the Poblacion, Makato and 9 kms. North of Kalibo. It is created by virtue of Republic Act 4711 on June 18, 1966 but was non-operational for 30 years.

             Since NPTC did not operate, Aklan Agricultural College, now Aklan State University in Banga, Aklan openend its extension class at the NPTC building upon the initiative of Brgy. Captain Urbano Tabanera of Barangay Aglucay through Resolution No. 9. S. of 1974, requesting His Excellency President Ferdinand E. Marcos to convert NPTC into an Agricultural and Vocational College and make it a branch of Aklan Agricultural College. Said resolution was referred to DECS Secretary who instructed DECS Regional Director to take appropriate steps. On June 29, 1977, ACC’s request to utilize the non-operational NPTC school site and facilities was approved by DECS Secretary Narciso Albaracin. This approval was referred to AAC Superintendent Helmar E. Aguilar, thus, on June 1979, AAC opened its door to freshmen high school. On April 10, 1992. Aklan Agricultural College was converted into Aklan State College of Agricultural through Republic Act 7371 signed by Pres. Corazon C. Aquino.

In 1995, the Provincial Government of Aklan, the Sangguniang Bayan of Makato in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Sport Aklan proposed the opening of the Northern
Panay Teachers College offering the First Year of the 4 year curriculum of Bachelor of  Secondary Education. On February 10, 1995, Schools Division Superindent of Aklan, Cresente S. Albado endorsed Wilfredo C. Arboleda as Officer- In –charge of NPTC and which was duly approved by the Regional Director ,DECS Regional Office V1, Iloilo City. In June 1996, NPTC was opened offering Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Technology and Home Economics at the Calangcang Elementary School with volunteers faculty and  staff.  In the same year  also, ASCA Extension opened its First Year Curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Major in Agricultural Education.

            On August 12, 1996, Mrs. Marichu S. Gallego was designated OIC of NPTC by Angel Alcala, CHED Chairman in 1997, the Physical Education major was offered. By  the second semester of 1997, Dr.Arturo I. Zonio, Vocational Schools Superintendent of Roxas Memorial College of Arts and Trades, Kalibo was designated OIC of NPTC.

            Since NPTC did not have a school site, the Provincial Government of Aklan donated 10 has. Lot at Barangay Castillo, Makato, Aklan, a 1 storey administration building amounting to  P 1.7 M was conducted on the site.

            In 1999, the Department of Budget and Management through RA 7722 implemented Phase I of the integration of CHED Supervised institution to State Universities and Colleges, thus NPTC was integrated to ASCA.

            With the integration, NPTC transferred to Calangcang, Makato, Aklan. On April 4, 2001, ASCA was converted to Aklan State University through RA. 9055. On January 10, 2003, through Memorandum Order No. 04-123 by President Benny A. Palma, NPTC was placed under the School of Arts and Sciences, as Teacher Education Center. This Center now is what is called the Aklan State University Teacher Education Center (ASU TEC).
