DepEd says no more weekend homework: Memo No. 392-2010

DepEd Memo No. 392-2010 | DepEd bans weekend homework. The Philippine Department of Education or DepEd issued a memorandum banning the weekend home works being given to public elementary school pupils.

Here is what the memo states: "no homework/assignments shall be given during weekends for pupils to enjoy their childhood, and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the thought of doing lots of homework.”

The DepEd goes by the ground that in order to promote family ties and quality time within the family, the ban has been issued. However, rains of criticisms poured from the teaching sector. Benjo Basas, president of the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition said that the Memo 392 actually "violates the academic freedom of educators to give their students the best education possible".

We know our students’ capacity and how long it would take them to finish their homework. It’s not to make their lives harder. Homework can be used to teach them self-discipline, time management and how to become responsible students

Basas said in an ABS-CBN "Umagang kay Ganda".
